Island Escape: A Unique Opportunity

Island Escape: A Unique Opportunity

The Irish government is offering individuals up to €80,000 (£69,000) to relocate and purchase a property on one of Ireland’s enchanting offshore islands. In a bid to boost the population of these remote locations, the government recently unveiled a ten-year national policy known as ‘Our Living Islands’.

However, these generous grants come with specific conditions. To be eligible, prospective buyers must acquire a property constructed before 1993 that has remained vacant for a minimum of two years. The funds can only be used for building-related expenses such as insulation installation, structural improvements, and redecoration.

‘Our Living Islands’ Policy

Heather Humphreys, the Republic of Ireland’s Minister for Rural and Community Development, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative. She stated, “‘Our Living Islands’ is our new ten-year National Islands Policy, the first of its kind in 27 years. It encompasses 80 actions designed to support and empower our island communities and their residents.”

The policy focuses on enhancing housing, improving access to essential services like healthcare and education, establishing high-speed broadband connections, and further developing outdoor amenities to boost tourism and foster sustainable island communities.

Embrace Island Life

The ‘Our Living Islands’ grants are an extension of an existing initiative in Ireland known as ‘Croí Cónaithe’. As part of this scheme, individuals have the opportunity to relocate to various areas, including Arranmore, situated off the coast of County Donegal, renowned for its picturesque beaches and cliffs. Another option is Clare Island, located off the coast of County Mayo, with a resident population of only 160.

The government’s policy aims to ensure the longevity and vitality of offshore island communities. It will strive to improve housing, water infrastructure, and access to essential services in healthcare and education. Successful applicants may receive up to €84,000 (£72,000) to transform their purchased property into a secluded island paradise.

Prospective applicants can apply to the scheme starting from Saturday, July 1, 2023. The opportunity to embrace island life and be a part of vibrant, sustainable communities awaits those seeking a unique and tranquil escape.
